In July 2016, a petition to cancel journalist Kathleen Parker’s scheduled fall lecture circulated at Elon University. The petitioners’ grievances centered on a book Parker wrote in 2008, which they say blamed victims of rape for the tragedies that befell them. Parker was not ultimately removed from the schedule, and she delivered her lecture in October of 2016.
William Ayers, University of Wyoming
The University of Wyoming disinvited William Ayers, a co-founder of the 1960s-era radical group, the Weather Underground, from speaking at the university after receiving angry calls and letters from students and alumni.
Padgett v. Auburn University
Cameron Padgett rented an auditorium on Auburn University’s campus for Richard Spencer, a notorious white supremacist, to speak. Fearing violence and protests the University cancelled the speech. Padgett filed for a preliminary injunction and which was granted.
Keister v. Bell
Traveling minister was stopped from preaching on a sidewalk adjacent to the University of Alabama by campus police because he did not have the required permit.
College Republicans of the University of Washington v. Cauce
The College Republican student organization attempted to bring Joey Gibson, a controversial right-wing figure onto campus. The University, applying the “Safety and Security Policy,” attempted to charge the club exorbitant security fees.
Bloedorn v. Grube
An evangelical preacher filed suit against Georgia State University after he was denied use of the University’s free speech zone.
Young America Foundation v. Kaler
Conservative student group sued the University of Minnesota after the University forced them to move a Ben Shapiro speech to a less desirable location.
Kalamazoo Peace Center v. Dunn
A student organization attempted to have a musician and activist give an address on campus, and the University required that they pay for police security in order to host the event.

Students are forced to attend and then stand after a political and racially charged speech by a major donor to a public school.
