Summary

In April 2016, Professor Nicolas Wolfinger of the University of Utah was subject to a Title IX investigation. A female colleague had filed a harassment complaint after Wolfinger had allegedly recounted stories about his proposal to his ex-wife that took place during a lap dance at a strip club. He was also accused of gender discrimination for a separate incident for allegedly expressing disdain for a colleague on the basis of her sex. Wolfinger provided a written rebuttal of all charges. The University’s Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action proceeded to interview twelve of Wolfinger’s colleagues. Four months into the inquiry, Wolfinger received a written report exonerating him of all charges of sexual harassment and gender discrimination. His accuser remained unknown to him for the entirety of the process. Wolfinger has gone on to argue that the entire Title XI is in need of reform.
