Summary

The Chemeketa Students for Life is a student-run anti-abortion group at Chemeketa Community College. The group holds events, passes out fliers, and organizes demonstrations on Chemeketa’s campus. In February of 2020, the group filed suit against the College for requiring students to provide the school with notice two weeks prior to a demonstration and restricting demonstration to two “free speech zones” on campus. Emma Howell and Marcos Sanchez are co-presidents of the organization and serve as the named plaintiffs. They claim that they must be able to spontaneously demonstrate in order to effectively communicate their message. They also argue that the free speech zones on campus are too small, and that, absent the school’s restrictive policies, they would hand out fliers and demonstrate more often. The group is being represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian non-profit organization.
