Summary
In December 2023, University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill resigned amid intense backlash over her congressional testimony on antisemitism, where critics said she failed to unequivocally condemn antisemitic rhetoric during a House Education Committee hearing. The controversy sparked widespread outrage among students, faculty, donors, and lawmakers, leading to the withdrawal of a $100 million donation and the collapse of a state funding bill. Following her resignation, Dr. J. Larry Jameson, dean of the Perelman School of Medicine, was named interim president. The university’s Board of Trustees and new leadership have launched initiatives to improve campus climate, including establishing an Office of Campus Climate and Inclusion and enhancing staff and faculty training on addressing hate speech and fostering inclusivity.
