Summary
The Young American for Freedom (YAF) chapter at University of Buffalo is suing the University of Buffalo Student Association over a speech incident that took place in March 2023. In March 2023, the student group invited Michael Knowles, host of the Daily Wire who remarked that “transgenderism” should be “eradicated from public life”, to speak on campus. The event was met with protestors who chanted “trans lives matter”. After the event, the University of Buffalo Student Organization changed its constitution to prohibit clubs with national affiliations to exist on campus. YAF soon took legal action against the University of Buffalo Student Association, and the Student Association retracted the previous change but added the requirement that student groups can only be recognized on campus if they forfeit their rights to legal actions against the school.
In December 2024, a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit, and YAF appealed to the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The suit is currently awaiting a response from the court.
