Summary
Monte Miller was an associate professor in the School of Social Work at East Carolina University (ECU). On June 25, 2021, a post appeared on Miller’s Facebook page that read “Hey there. How about fuck Juneteenth!!!” The post sparked outrage on social media, and although Miller told local media that he “never made the post,” he resigned from his position at ECU.
In a statement, ECU said that it “does not endorse or support viewpoints that dismiss, marginalize or disrespect anyone based on race, gender or ethnicity.” However, the statement affirmed the university’s commitment to “upholding First Amendment rights.”
