Summary
Eastern Kentucky University placed a “Media Requests” policy for all resident advisors. This policy bans resident advisors from speaking to any type of media source. This ban included both on and off campus media outlets and ensured that if a resident advisor is a member of the press, they cannot disclose any internal information.
Resident advisors at Eastern Kentucky University have expressed concerns that should they agree they may face punishment. In response to being asked to comment, many stated the reporter must address administrators with higher standing in the University; or simply ignored the request. A news group, The Eastern Progress, reported this ban to the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, with hopes of reserving this Free Speech violation.
Eastern Kentucky University’s ban has been stated to be violating EKU policy, as the university states they are protective of free speech. Journals and resident advisors demand that the university recognizes their right to speak freely.
