Summary
In April 2024, the University of Texas at Austin disciplined students involved in pro-Palestinian protests on April 24 and 29 for violating campus conduct rules. Shortly afterward, the university offered a “deferred suspension” option allowing students to remain enrolled without the disciplinary action appearing on their transcripts. Students who accepted this option were required to complete an exam on university rules and waive their right to appeal. Those who declined faced suspension but retained the right to appeal through a university hearing. Some students accepted the deferred suspension, while others chose to contest the disciplinary actions. The disciplinary actions led to a federal lawsuit, Qaddumi v. The University of Texas at Austin, challenging the university’s handling of the protests and alleged violations of students’ First Amendment rights.
