Summary
On January 16, 2024, the University of Michigan Board of Regents unanimously adopted a set of “Principles on Diversity of Thought and Freedom of Expression.” These principles “reaffirmed” the university’s commitment to protecting First Amendment rights and promoting open dialogue across campus. The adoption followed months of student-led protests and activism, particularly in response to the October 7 Hamas attack and subsequent university actions. The principles built upon previous policies and aimed to balance free expression with the need to address conduct that disrupts university activities.
