Summary

In late October 2025 the University of Wyoming discovered two separate incidents involving antisemitic and violent messages on campus. On October 24 students at an organization event placed a large inflatable free speech ball outside the student union. Some of the messages written on the ball included threats, references to past acts of violence, and statements targeting Jewish people and other groups. Campus police documented the messages and the university began an internal review to determine next steps.

On October 31 carved pumpkins displaying Nazi imagery including a swastika, SS runes, a hooded figure associated with the Ku Klux Klan, and the word Hitler were placed near the student union. University staff removed the pumpkins, classified as abandoned property, and identified the students responsible. The university notified the community and confirmed that both incidents were under investigation by the Equal Opportunity Report and Response office to ensure compliance with civil rights protocols.

University leadership issued a statement condemning the messages and symbols, affirming that they ran counter to university values and expressing support for students who felt threatened or targeted. The statement emphasized the institution’s commitment to free expression while noting that hate and bigotry were not acceptable on campus. University officials described the ongoing investigation as thorough, involving interviews with students and staff, review of security footage, and coordination with campus police. They also communicated plans to provide resources and support for affected students and encouraged the campus community to report any further incidents. Some faculty and students expressed concern about the timing and tone of the university response, noting that the statements followed several days after the events.
