Summary
In May 2024, seven Illinois State University students were arrested for criminal trespassing after a pro-Palestinian sit-in at Hovey Hall. They faced charges for refusing to leave the building after hours and initially pleaded not guilty. In August 2024, the students filed a lawsuit against ISU, alleging their arrests and suspensions violated their First Amendment rights and were retaliatory. The lawsuit names university officials alongside the institution. The case was moved to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois
