Summary
A student chapter of Young Americans for Liberty brought a lawsuit against University of Alabama, Huntsville to challenge the University’s “speech zone” policy. Students are required to obtain a permit to speak on campus three business days in advance and may only speak in designated “speech zones.”
The student chapter alleges that the rules violate Alabama’s Campus Free Speech Act, which requires public colleges and universities to respect the free speech rights of students on campus and explicitly prohibits speech zones.
In February 2022, the student chapter appealed the case to the Alabama Supreme Court after a lower court dismissed the case. The chapter argues that the campus illegally prevents students from engaging in spontaneous expression and from promoting their events.
