Summary
On November 18, 2025, the University of Pittsburgh Student Government Board (SGB) passed a resolution affirming freedom of speech on campus. The resolution stated that students should be able to engage in expression and debate on political, social, and other issues and addressed the importance of protecting speech and open discussion within the university community.
The resolution followed the university’s October 1, 2025 release of its lowest score to date in an annual campus free speech ranking, which evaluated student perceptions of the campus speech environment, university policies, and speech-related incidents. The ranking followed prior disputes at Pitt involving campus demonstrations, student organizations, and a canceled speaking event in 2024.
In November 2025, SGB also considered issues involving student rights and university policies, including a campus immigration enforcement rapid-response training initiative. The initiative provided information regarding student rights, available resources, and university procedures related to potential immigration enforcement activity.
The passage of the free speech resolution was part of SGB’s actions addressing campus speech and student concerns during the 2025 academic year.
