Summary

On September 25, 2024, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) derecognized its chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), ending the group’s status as a registered student organization. University officials cited violations of campus policies during a series of pro-Palestinian demonstrations. A disciplinary panel concluded that SJP organized and promoted unapproved demonstrations, erected unapproved structures, failed to reserve space for activities, directed members to obstruct enforcement personnel attempting to remove those structures, and engaged in confrontations with staff. The derecognition required SJP to halt all activities and removed the group’s access to university funding, space, and other resources typically available to recognized student organizations. SJP chapter members disputed the university’s account of the negotiations leading to the decision. UIUC officials stated that SJP is not eligible to petition to regain recognized student organization status until Fall 2027.

The sequence of events began in April 2024, when SJP members organized demonstrations to protest what they described as Israeli military actions amounting to genocide in Gaza. On April 20, 2024, the university issued a warning to the students involved, citing violations of campus policy. Following the demonstrations, at least one student was charged with mob action, and over the summer, additional students faced mob action and related felony charges for their participation in the protests. Prosecutors asserted that the demonstrators exceeded lawful protest boundaries. Charges included mob action and obstructing a peace officer, and defense attorneys sought dismissal of some charges on First Amendment grounds. One student initially charged reached an agreement to have charges dropped, while others continued through the court process. At least one individual pleaded guilty to obstructing a peace officer, receiving community service and conditional discharge rather than jail time.

The suspension of SJP occurred in the context of enforcement of the Student Code of Conduct. University officials maintained that the derecognition was based on policy violations and was not tied solely to off-campus activities. The decision required SJP chapter members to cease all university-related operations while the administration reviewed compliance, and the students disputed the accuracy of the university’s account throughout the process.
