Summary
On April 8, 2025, University of Houston-Downtown English Professor Adam Ellwanger published an article criticizing the Academic Freedom Alliance’s defense of students and scholars whose visas had been revoked or threatened following campus protests and political activity. Ellwanger, a member of the Academic Freedom Alliance, argued that the organization had incorrectly applied academic freedom protections to student political activity rather than academic expression.
Ellwanger alleged that a fellow University of Houston-Downtown professor had referred to him during a class discussion as a “Nazi” and “white supremacist.” Ellwanger stated that students raised concerns about the remarks. University of Houston-Downtown officials reviewed the matter and stated that they did not find a violation of university policy.
