Summary
Students for Justice at UCLA in Palestine held a protest on October 7, 2025, to commemorate the second anniversary of the start of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. About 70 students gathered and marched across campus, carrying Palestinian flags, pulling a wagon of red flowers, and holding a coffin-shaped object as a symbolic gesture. Protesters chanted “Free Palestine” and other slogans while citing more than 67,000 Palestinians killed since October 7, 2023.
Later that evening, students held a vigil at UCLA. Around 60 students attended, participating in recitations from the Quran, readings, and personal testimonies from Palestinians who had been displaced. Participants lit candles and held signs calling for solidarity with Palestinians.
University officials and campus police monitored both events. During the afternoon protest, officials informed students they were in violation of UCLA’s time, place and manner policy and would need to relocate. At the evening vigil, more than 20 officers and personnel were present at the perimeter of the original gathering site. Students followed instructions to move, and both events proceeded without reported physical confrontations. Earlier in 2025, UCLA’s Office of Student Conduct had recommended indefinitely revoking SJP’s student organization status and suspending Graduate SJP at UCLA for four years following a February protest outside UC Regent Jay Sures’ home, in which demonstrators chanted and left red handprints on his door. SJP has led multiple protests on campus since that decision.
