Summary
UC Berkeley disclosed the names of 160 students, faculty, and staff to federal authorities as part of an investigation into alleged antisemitism on campus. The move, directed by the University of California Office of the President, drew widespread criticism from faculty, labor groups, and civil liberties advocates. Critics argued that the university was not legally required to identify individuals and that the disclosures endangered privacy, safety, and free speech.
The disclosures occurred within the context of a broader Trump administration crackdown on colleges. Following the October 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel and the subsequent Israeli military response, President Trump launched a federal task force to investigate antisemitic incidents at universities and threatened penalties including potential loss of federal funding for schools perceived as tolerating illegal protests. Columbia University and UC Berkeley were among the campuses under scrutiny.
