Summary
In March 2023, Joy Alonzo, a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Texas A&M Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, was placed on administrative leave after a student reported her for making a disparaging remark about Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick during a lecture she was presenting on the opioid crisis at the University of Texas Medical Branch. The reporting student was the daughter of Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham. Alonzo denied making a disparaging remark. Alonzo was reported for allegedly saying that the Lt. Gov thinks that kids who overdose “deserve to die.” After an internal investigation could not confirm any wrongdoing, Alonzo was allowed to keep her job.
