Summary
Following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, Mississippi College employees made social media posts that drew significant public attention. On September 17, the college suspended two employees for statements deemed inconsistent with the institution’s mission and values. One of the suspended individuals was Ashley Krason, an assistant professor in the Modern Languages Department and coordinator of the TESOL program. Krason had shared a Facebook post describing Kirk’s death as a “Greek tragedy” and suggesting it was a “self-fulfilling prophecy” tied to his political advocacy. The post generated backlash from students, alumni, and members of the community.
The second employee, whose identity was not publicly disclosed, was also suspended pending review for making statements considered inappropriate and falling short of professional conduct expectations. Mississippi College condemned all forms of violence and stated that such social media posts could not be tolerated within the institution. The suspensions were part of the college’s response to uphold professional standards following widespread criticism of the employees’ remarks in the wake of Kirk’s killing.
These actions took place in a broader national context in which universities have faced scrutiny both for employee statements about Charlie Kirk and for disciplinary measures taken in response.
