Summary
According to McLaughlin’s lawsuit, the coaches of the women’s volleyball team at the University of Oklahoma screened a documentary called “13th” for the team during the spring of 2020. McLaughlin, a conservative Christian, was asked to comment on the documentary, and her critical remarks about its liberal “slant” led her to be ostracized, harassed, and subjected to disciplinary action. McLaughlin alleges that this treatment eventually caused her to transfer out of the university. In May 2021, she filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma against the coaches and the university’s board of trustees for violations of her First Amendment rights. In October 2021, the university’s motion to dismiss was granted, but the coaches’ motion was denied. McLaughlin has filed an appeal.
