Summary
Lawrence Alexander was invited to contribute to a festschrift on the work of Michael Perry, a noted legal scholar at Emory. Alexander chose to focus his critique on Perry’s work on disparate racial impact and equal protection. After reviewing his contribution, the editorial board of the Emory Law Journal returned his submission with a request for substantial revision. In particular, the board objected to the “hurtful” and “insensitive” language employed by Alexander in his discussion of systemic racism in America, as well as the absence of a strong connection between that discussion and Alexander’s main critique of Perry’s work. Alexander refused to revise, and two other contributors withdrew their work in protest of how Alexander had been treated.
