Summary
In October 2023, Lafayette College became one of seven higher education institutions under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) for alleged antisemitic and anti‑Arab harassment, including posts on social media and on‑campus activity during the Israel–Hamas conflict. Complaints included flyers calling for the destruction of Israel and social media content perceived as hateful. The college held interfaith events and engaged with OCR throughout the review process.
By June 2024, OCR concluded its investigation and found Lafayette had failed to consistently address antisemitic incidents, particularly those occurring off campus or online. To resolve the investigation under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Lafayette agreed to strengthen its policies and procedures. The college committed to reviewing all 2023‑24 harassment complaints, enhancing documentation, training staff and students, updating response protocols, and sharing compliance reports with OCR for two years.
In March 2025, OCR included Lafayette among 60 institutions officially warned of potential enforcement actions for Title VI violations involving antisemitism on campus. Lafayette confirmed it remained in compliance with its resolution agreement and continued to implement the agreed-upon reforms.
