Summary
Josephine Meckseper is a German installation artist. On July 5, 2018, a work by Meckseper consisting of an outline of a map of the U.S. broken in half and printed onto an American flag was installed on the campus of the University of Kansas, part of a project called Pledges of Allegiance by the New York-based non-profit Creative Time. The flag caused an uproar among Republican lawmakers, who insisted that it be taken down because it defaced the U.S. flag and disrespected the military. The University of Kansas eventually succumbed to the pressure and agreed to take down the artwork, which had originally been scheduled to remain on view through July 31, 2018.
