Summary
John Eastman was a visiting professor at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Benson Center for the Study of Western Civilization for the 2020-21 school year. Following an appearance at the January 6, 2021 rally that preceded the violence at the Capitol, in which Eastman alleged that the election had been stolen, Eastman’s professional duties were relieved and his courses were cancelled by CU Boulder’s administration. The administration claimed that Eastman’s courses were cancelled due to low enrollment and that Eastman’s performance of outreach functions on behalf of the Benson Center would likely cause disruption and harm to the center.
On April 29, 2021, Eastman filed a notice of claim alleging defamation, breach of contract, and violation of his First Amendment rights against the administration over its response to his role in efforts to overturn the results of the presidential election. The notice of claim indicated that Eastman will seek at least $1.9 million in damages. This case is ongoing.
