On November 23, 2025, Duke University junior Artivista Karlin was among approximately 30 to 31 people arrested outside the Krome Detention Center in Miami-Dade County, Florida, during a protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Protesters marched to the facility, blocked its entrance gate, and called for the shutdown of the detention center, citing immigration detention conditions and deaths of individuals in ICE custody. Law enforcement arrested participants after dispersal orders. Karlin was charged with unlawful assembly, obstructing a highway, and resisting an officer without violence.
After the arrest, Duke University opened a student conduct review in November 2025 involving Karlin. The review examined whether her alleged conduct at the off-campus protest violated university policies governing disruption, interference, and disorderly conduct, while her criminal case remained unresolved.
Following the arrest, Karlin entered a pretrial diversion process in which prosecution was deferred while she was required to meet specified conditions set by the jurisdiction. The case remained in diversion status, with no conviction or final court disposition reported in the available materials during the period of Duke’s review.
Karlin claimed she was present at the protest as both an activist and a citizen photojournalist documenting the demonstration. She also stated she was affiliated with the Sunrise Movement, a youth-led climate justice organization focused on climate change and economic inequality, and involved in campus organizing focused on immigration policy and economic justice.
In early April 2026, Duke University closed its student conduct review and notified Karlin that it would not pursue further disciplinary action.
