Summary
Donna Hughes is a professor in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Rhode Island. On February 28, 2021, Hughes published a controversial essay about gender identity on the feminist website 4W, prompting calls for her resignation by student groups and outside activists. The University of Rhode Island then investigated Hughes and threatened her with disciplinary action. In May 2021, the university abandoned its investigation of Hughes and recognized the academic freedom of its faculty.
