Summary

Students in Professor Donald Hindley’s Latin American politics course filed a complaint with the dean of the political science department after Hindley used the term “wetbacks” in a discussion about racism towards Mexican American immigrants. The complaint was referred to the human resources department, which found Hindley guilty of racial harassment. Following the decision, Brandeis mandated that Hindley complete sensitivity training and that an assistant provost monitor his course for an indefinite period of time. A group of students staged a walkout in protest of the decision and Brandeis’ treatment of Hindley. Hindley also filed a formal appeal to the decision. In 2015, Hindley retired from Brandeis after a one-year sabbatical, citing growing conservatism as reasons for his departure.
