Summary
On March 26, 2026, the Department of Justice opened a civil rights compliance review into admissions practices at Ohio State University College of Medicine. The inquiry focuses on whether the medical school engaged in “possible race discrimination in medical school admissions” in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, following the Supreme Court’s 2023 decision restricting the use of race in admissions. DOJ officials described the action as part of ongoing federal efforts to ensure institutions receiving federal funding comply with civil rights requirements in admissions processes.
As part of the review, the Department of Justice requested extensive admissions-related records covering multiple cycles. The request includes applicant-level data, academic indicators (such as GPA and standardized test scores), demographic information including race and ethnicity, admissions outcomes, and materials used to evaluate applicants. It also seeks internal documents governing admissions policies and procedures, including communications related to whether and how race was considered in admissions decisions, as well as any internal analyses examining admissions outcomes across demographic groups.
The DOJ additionally requested documentation of how admissions decisions are made in practice, including committee deliberations, evaluation rubrics, and internal guidance provided to admissions staff. The scope includes records reflecting any changes made to admissions policies following the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, including updates to diversity-related policies and selection criteria.
Ohio State acknowledged receipt of the request and indicated it would review and respond. The university stated it is committed to complying with applicable federal law and legal rulings governing admissions practices. No findings of wrongdoing have been made, and the matter remains in the investigative stage.
The Department of Justice opened parallel investigations into Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of California, San Diego medical schools, subjecting those institutions to similar requests for admissions records, applicant data, and internal documentation related to admissions criteria and the consideration of race in selection processes.
