Summary

Following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, Clemson University disciplined multiple employees over social media posts related to his death. The university initially suspended a professor and removed two faculty members from teaching duties while it conducted investigations. In the days that followed, Clemson terminated two professors and one staff employee for posts deemed “inappropriate” and inconsistent with institutional standards. The posts reportedly mocked or expressed approval of Kirk’s death. Clemson emphasized that its actions were consistent with institutional policies, state law, and due process, and it held a special meeting of the Board of Trustees to address concerns from the campus community.

Even before the university completed its investigations or imposed disciplinary actions, some state lawmakers met to discuss potential consequences for Clemson, arguing that the university should be held accountable for the speech of its faculty and staff. Lawmakers proposed measures to reduce or withhold state funding as a form of punishment. Clemson officials maintained that the university had the authority to take these actions and cited guidance from the South Carolina Attorney General. The university framed its response as necessary to uphold a safe and respectful campus environment and reinforce expectations for employee conduct on and off social media.

The dismissals and suspensions became part of a broader national conversation about free speech, academic freedom, and social media accountability. Dozens of educators across the country faced scrutiny or termination for similar posts referencing Kirk’s death.
