Summary
In 2024, a coalition of over 30 pro-Palestinian students, faculty, legal observers, journalists, and activists filed a lawsuit against UCLA alleging civil rights violations. The plaintiffs claim that UCLA officials discriminated against them by failing to protect their protest encampment during demonstrations related to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
They report that on April 30, 2024, their encampment was violently attacked by counter-protesters, yet UCLA and campus law enforcement failed to intervene effectively. The next day, campus police cleared the encampment, leading to over 200 arrests of pro-Palestinian demonstrators. The lawsuit alleges wrongful arrests, excessive use of force, and violation of their rights to free expression and peaceful assembly.
The plaintiffs seek damages and demand that UCLA implement policies to better protect pro-Palestinian voices and ensure their safety on campus.
