Summary
On April 13, 2026, the Louisiana State University Student Senate passed a bill restricting outside support for Student Government election campaigns. The legislation prohibited Student Government tickets from receiving financial or in-kind assistance from politically affiliated organizations. The measure was intended to regulate outside involvement in student elections and was sent to Student Body President Lavar Henderson for approval.
On April 20, 2026, Henderson vetoed the bill, citing concerns about its potential impact on First Amendment protections and requesting further review of the legislation. The Student Senate later voted to override the veto, passing the bill by a 48-0-6 vote. Following the override, the legislation took effect without the Student Body President’s signature.
On April 28, 2026, the LSU University Court issued an injunction blocking enforcement of the Student Senate bill after a challenge alleged that the legislation violated First Amendment protections. The injunction temporarily prevented implementation of the restrictions on outside involvement in Student Government elections while the court reviewed the challenge. No subsequent public ruling or additional proceedings were identified
